  1. I chose this video because we were shown a video of the very talented 9yr. old girl singing "Born this Way" by Lady Gaga and I thought this was a pretty talented little kid as well. He looks maybe 3 years old and is very good with the words for his age! Also, this video relates to the British Invasion and The Beatles. This video shows how popular the Beatle's remain in our society today and that their songs are relived through the youth of today.

This is a video of Iggy Pop performing "16" in 1978. Iggy Pop is considered the grandfather of punk. In class we watched a video on his stage antics and on his unique style of music and its industrial influences. In the video posted you can see one of his high-energy performances and listen to a classic.

I am a fan of modern punk and had never heard of Iggy. I like most of his songs on youtube and so decided to share.

I chose this video featuring Bob Dylan, The Avett Brothers, and Mumford and Sons from the grammys because chapter three talks about folk music. In lecture we watched performances by Bob Dylan and it turned me onto his music. I have recently began to like folk music and I though it was cool to learn where it originated. This performance was very unique because three large folk singers came together. I love this video!

The song that I have chosen is the Neil Young version of the song "Ohio". This song was written ti commemorate the 4 students who were killed during the Kent State Massacre in 1969. We learned about this topic a few weeks ago in class and it amazes me that something of this extent, that caused so much controversy, happened just down the street from me, in a way. This event caused a huge uproar because of the fact that these students were not doing anything wrong and were killed for it. This event alone, caused 4 million students nationwide to protest and closed over 900 colleges and universities. Its crazy that all of this happened in Ohio...

In class we were asked to pick a song that had meaning to us. When I am asked a question like that on the spot I never have an answer. Now I do. We also spoke about Greenday and how sometimes a band can be more prominent in different countries than in America. I have always loved Greenday and their song Good Riddance means a lot to me because I was in 4-H as a kid and I went to camp and at the end of camp we all sat together and they played this song and it had a huge impact on me, and still does.

The book discusses break dancing in Chapter 7. So I chose two clips that show break dancing in different forms. The first clip is a martial arts form called Capoeira, which is where the book states break dancing originated from. The second clip is of teenagers in a subway station performing break dancing. Both clips show how athletic ability is needed to maintain balance on the head or when doing flips. It's interesting how even though one is martial arts and the other is dancing, both maintain some of the same movements.

  8. The book talks about Rock opera and mentions the Wall as last Rock opera in England. The story is about a boy who losses his dad during the war and is left to the care of people who make his life miserable. And he in turn builds a Wall. This song is called “Hey You” it displays the boy’s loneliness and his fight to break out. The lyrics are amazing and the guitar is even better. Pink Floyd has always done a great job combining amazing stories and cool effects with great guitar solos.

In light of our guest speaker who taught us the more about the origns and how the hip hop culture is so much more than just rap. It is signified by art like graffiti, dancing like b-boying or popping, and the Nation of Gods and Earths. Doing a little more research on the Nation of Gods and Earths I found that there are still present day artist like Nas, Busta Rhymes, and Jay Electronica who are 5 percenters. The song "Exhibit C" by Jay Electronica has direct references to the teachings of 5 percenters. A quick example of the a reference is when he says "When I was sleeping on the train," which meant literally he was sleeping but also figuritively that he lacked on of the key elements of the 5 pecenters which is knowledge.

This masterful piece of art is none other than Night Fever by the Bee Gees. This song represents everything that is groovy and hip. Noting beats blasting this song in your car as people your parent's age give you glances of disbelief. But seriously this song is awesome, has been shown in tons of movies, and pretty much sums up the disco era as a whole. This video shows the importance of being flashy in a disco song. There are lights everywhere, close shots on the face and crazy outfits. The relationship between disco and glamor is accurately represented.

This video is a news story about a british graffiti artist known only as Banksy. In class we briefly discussed graffiti art only in terms of hip hop. I wanted to post this to show that there is so much more to it than just what we were able to discuss. Graffiti art is a very significant part of the present day art world and I would be remiss if I didn't bring it into conversation. Outside the scope of hip hop culture, graffiti is a powerful rhetorical tool for reaching large and varied audiences to share what are often times intensely political and anti-establishment messages. This larger graffiti culture I believe still has its foundations in the hip hop culture existing for decades.

This is a picture of a painting by photorealist Glennray Tutor. The colors in the marbles are distorted and segmented drawing attention to the idea that the camera actually makes the subject more abstract than real looking. If we were to see these marbles in life they would appear translucent and easy to look through. In this painting though the eye is drawn to indiviual colors and the mechanics of the reflection. This idea is presented in our book as photorealism was popular in the 1970's; these ideals are are still used by painters today.

This is a video of the Beatles' first visit and performance in the United States. The performance took place on February 9, 1964. You can see and hear, as stated in the textbook, that the American fans were already crazy about the Beatles. What you can't see on the video are the 73 million viewers watching the performance (40% of the country). The Beatles obviously became one of the most popular groups in the history of rock and roll.

The last few days in class Moe talked to us about hip hop dance and breakdancing. He showed the Redbull challenge and how that whole competition worked. There have been many dance movies that have been created since then revolving that same idea. The idea of trying to out dance the opponent. The movie "You Got Served" is a movie that revolves around this idea. It is an inspiring and very attention grabbing movie. The dance moves the movie shows are way more advanced than the movies Moe showed us. But, still has the same exact idea. One group starts out and dances, and after they dance the other group tries to out-do their moves. This goes on until the crowd can decide a winner. The clip I included is the scene from the last battle in the movie where the alleged "good guys" win the competition.

I choose this video because I was one who told Mrs. Savage about this little kid (if she showed the video in class). It's an example of someone making it due to the use of Youtube. I find it amazing the amount of talent one kid at this young of age to have in anything let alone the drums. I really hope this kid sticks with the drums and I hope social structures don't pull him into rapping or hip-hop.

I chose this video because it is of break dancers today. Shortly after watching the old break dancing videos are guest speaker showed in class, I had to look up some videos of some on youtube. I went through some of the older videos like the ones shown in class and found some videos of break dancing today. And i must say not much has changed. I see alot of the same moves being duplicated the only thing is moves seem to be done alot faster now. Also alot of breakdancers these days add more to the dance moves by either there only style or special movement with it. But overall not much has changed, todays break dancers often times have on the same clothing as the older ones

John Lennon... one of the founding members of The Beatles. This class has opened up my eyes to such beautiful music. I have become more interested in John Lennon through The Beatles from hearing about them in our lectures. I've always known of The Beatles but haven't really looked into their music. I think these artists of the older days have so much to get across to us today and they can be so inspiring.

    "Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
    Imagine all the people
    Living life in peace"

    Imagine it. :)

In class we talked about MTV and TRL. Then we talked about Hip Hop and it made me think of when my friends would hurry home from school to watch TRL and that this was the first video I remember watching on that show. It also uses the competition and battle techniques talked about in making fun of Easy E in the video.

I chose this video as I thought about it when learning of the Beatles in class and the correalating art of those times. As you see in this strawberryfields forever video, they utilize the minimalist approach with random objects of particular meaning of the times incorporated in the background. They have a lot of close up head shots while things are going on in the background, but the head shots are so close you are not sure what is really going on.
