Performance Art
Read the following article about Performance Art. What is your understanding of performance art? Have you seen anything, in person, which would fall into this category? What was your experience with it?
Performance art is often controversial and often includes biting social commentary. It is considered visual art but can include aspects of all performing arts – music, theatre, dance, puppetry, etc. It also often includes audience participation, sometimes to the point of making the audience uncomfortable.
A well-known performance artist is Marina Abramovic. An interview containing background information can be found here and you can read about her recent exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC here. I happened to visit the exhibit and can testify to the extreme emotional reactions people had to her art and her presence.
In your answer, chose one of these options to answer:
#1. Can you find examples of other performance artists? Post a link to a video of a performance piece you strongly like or strongly dislike. Tell me why.
OR
#2. If you had to create a performance art piece, what would it include? Where would you perform it? What would be the purpose behind it? Be creative, think about what kind of piece you would create.
All answers should include your thoughts on the following:
Why do you think people have such strong reactions to performance art? Do you consider it art? Why or why not? How does it fit into your established view of the “art world” or the “art industry?” Why do you think so much of performance art is or becomes controversial?
My understanding of performance art is that it's a live form of art that's performed by a person or persons with or without props. I've seen my girlfriend get many ear piercing and I have painted my body and laid on a canvas (large piece of paper). I like my girlfriend's piercings, and I had fun being painted.

If I had to create a performance art piece, it would be a comedy show. I am a funny person that likes to tell jokes. I would interact with my audience, which would be a random group of people who came to my show at an auditorium. The purpose would be to make money and to make people laugh.
People like performance art because it's live and interactive. The art world is a very broad term that means every little thing that could possibly be art, because really, almost anything can be considered art. Performance art is controversial because a lot of people want to have their own title, and just being another form of art may detract attention and makes one less original.

My understanding of performance art is that it is done live and sometimes even the performer does not exactly know what his final product will look like. I consider it art because it evokes deep thoughts and emotions form the audience watching the performance art. I think that performance art can sometimes be controversial because they make their money off the tickets and not off of the art pieces they make during the show. A lot of people criticize performing artists because in many cases they just do the same act over and over to different audiences.

I had the pleasure of seeing the blue man group. I enjoyed the facial expressions of the three members on stage and how goofy and innocent they all were. I liked how they kept me entertained the entire time by using a wide variety of props including paint and various objects used as musical instruments. They also got made the audience members of the performance. I think I especially enjoyed it because I enjoy a lot of the slapstick humor of the 1920's-1930's, especially the three stooges.
My understanding of performing art is anything live that isn't considered to be theater, but expresses some sort of art. A few years ago, my family took a vacation up on Lake Michigan. On one of our vacation days, we visited a little town with a bunch of little shops and some old battle ships that we could tour. Every night at sunset, on the other side of the channel, there was a big water light show. Water would be shot up in all directions with color being shined up from below with the accompaniment of music creating an amazing show. I had never seen anything like this before and I really enjoyed it.

ReplyDeleteI think of performing art as a talent that people express in a mindful way. It isn't directed by someone, and they aren't told what to do. I have heard of (never seen myself) human statues. Where people are painted or dresses a certain way to blend in with their surroundings. There are many different renditions of human statues these days. However I found this link of a man painted to look like a statue but then uses his mouth to create sound like a robot. I find it interesting being this is just as much art to me as a painting. I think it is a neat idea, and funny how much people are ignorant to their surroundings. I really enjoyed this video, and think it fits perfectly as a performing artist.

ReplyDeletePerformance art to me is anything that expresses or shows something to people through the use of live means. The only thing that I can think of is going to old Civil War and 1700's live exhibits where you walk around the town and everyone is reenacting what people in this time period were doing. When I think of performance arts one example that comes to mind is the naked cowboy in New York City who performs in Time Square. He dresses up in his cowboy hat and sings songs on his guitar at the large audiences that are around him. I think many people will have such negative reactions to this type of work since it is right up in their face. Yes, I do consider it art since it expresses something to people. It fits in well with my understanding of art since it falls within my definition of art that it should be an expression of something to others. I think it is controversial since it challenges people and is live.

Shows a man walking through the street in New York City naked singing and playing his guitar so if that's not performance art I don't know what is.
