Jimi Hendrix is in multiple chapters of our book. His drug related songs, like Purple Haze, were popular during the 60's and 70's. JImi Hendrix was one of the lucky artists who participated in Woodstock. I chose this song because I can remember my dad alwas singing it when I was younger.

ReplyDeleteI have posted the link to the video for "Something" by The Beatles.
The Beatles are in a large part of our book, class, as well as in our current popular music. I have always been a fan of the versatility of their music. This has always been one of my favorite songs, and this video is a great example of what early music videos were (also from class). There is no high production value, just what could almost be home video of band members.

ReplyDeleteThe link above is a link to Johnny Cash's "Man in Black" video. It begins with Merle Haggard talking about Johnny who he compares to elvis. I remember listening to his records that my dad used to play while I was growing up, and I was very surprised that he was not mentioned this quarter in class or in the book. The "Man in Black" definitely talks about the social and economical hardships that were taking place during that time just as many of the artists that we discussed.

ReplyDeleteQueen is mentioned in chapter five, specifically "Bohemian Rhapsody". This song was the first to use a 100 voice choir, starting new styles of music. This song has been so influential on people throughout history that people do different genres of it. This is a video of people at my high school doing an interesting parody.

Jefferson Airplane is one of the Folk rock bands introduced in our text book, and it is also my favorite bands appeared in this book. At the Monterey Pop Festival, they utilized new technology to promote the psychedelic light show, which also impulsed the spread of color TV set. With Signe Toly Anderson's voice, their songs are comfortable to me.

ReplyDeleteJimi Hendrix. The name says enough really, but for sake of grading, I suppose I can say a little more. This is link is to the his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner that he performed at Woodstock. It is quite amazing how a man and a guitar can stir such emotion in an American like myself. Jimi Hendrix is another artist who spans all generations in my opinion. What he could do with a guitar should be marveled by all. It is unfortunate that he died so young, but with the life he was living, there's no way he was living a full life.
As a side note: I heard that he would put bacon grease on his forehead to get a bunch of zits, cut the tops of said zits using a strait razor, and then put LSD in his bandannas during shows. You know what they say... "you're not hardcore, unless you live hardcore."

Led Zeppelin is by far one of the greatest bands to ever exist. Led Zeppelin is known as the pioneers of heavy metal. However they are much more than that. They combine word music, blues, Indian and Rock to create a very unique sound. Robert Plant the lead singer is off Norwegian and Celtic descent. He has always been interested in folk tales and Norwegian Gods. This resulted in much of Led Zeppelins songs becoming almost a story, with imaginary creatures and faraway lands. The song Kashmir is a perfect example, listen to the begging the lyrics are amazing “I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been, sit with elders of a gentle race this world has seldom seen”

ReplyDeleteDon Kirshner was an important producer that we learned about in both class and the book. He literally created bands such as The Monkees and The Archies. He took trained actors and taught them to play basics in guitar, organ, and drums. He commericalized the bands so much that some of their records were obtained in cereal boxes! Kirshner took advantage of the hype of rock on America's youth and became very wealthy from it. The Archies which was also a Saturday morning cartoon was one of his masterpieces. Attached is the opening to the The Archies, a song called "Sugar Sugar"

ReplyDeleteParliament Funkadelic - Give up the funk
We covered how funk played into popular music. The book mentions George Clinton specifically. Interestingly enough, Clinton still tours with his band, in one form or another. I actually saw him a few years ago at Newport Music Hall during one such tour. It is every bit as absurd as this video. I remember specifically one member performing wearing nothing more than a giant diaper. Clinton himself is just as charismatic as ever. His influence on multitude of other artists can be seen clearly, and yet he still continues to be relevant today in his own right.

ReplyDeleteEleanor Rigby may be my favorite song by The Beatles. This song which came out in 1966 marks an era of experimental change in not only the The Beatles' music but for music in general. This song strays from the popular music of the early 60's and the Beatles' earlier work with the introduction of a string quartet and ominous lyrics. We discussed the importance of how The Beatles' changed the way music was percieved and considered and how a single genre could change within itself.

I chose the song Express Yourself by NWA because is one of the first rap songs that I really enjoyed listening to. It relates to class because NWA is mentioned in the book because of the influences they had on rap in Hip Hop Culture.

ReplyDeleteThis post is of a link of William Hung from American Idol. Although this person wasn't taken very seriously in the American Idol competition it is one of my favorite memories of the show and reminds me of the day we discussed the show in class. I remember Mrs. Savage speaking on how many artist on the show sold a numerous amount of records on itunes. And this reminded me of William Hung and reminded how he was actually offered a contract after his most famous "She Bangs" performance. Watching this clip today still makes me laugh.

I used this video because it showed hip hop culture that we talked about in class brought main stream in competition form. As was discussed in class, competition is a foundational expression in hip hop. In this video the dancers are "poppin". It is confrontational in nature and an off shoot of break dancing. A hybrid form of dance combining other forms of dance. Like was stated in class the dance is a way of competing instead of fighting.

ReplyDeleteRemember the video Dr. Funk showed in class a few weeks earlier called "The Way Things Go",by Peter Fischli and David Weiss...well here is a link to a more modern and popular version of that same idea, http://youtu.be/qybUFnY7Y8w. I'm sure you've hear of this band, OK Go, they're pretty popular and known for their eccentric and creative music videos. I chose this video because I think the ideas and the efforts that goes into making one of these causal chains is phenomenal. I was just really bored watching the one by Peter Fischli and David Weiss in class. This video is much more enjoyable to watch because it has great music to go along with it. Fischli and Weiss...start a band, you'll be much cooler!

Wow this video is impressive this band is awesome that music video was amazing. It was like a science project taken to the extreme it really fit the music well. I have to say I agree that this video was better than "The Way Things Go" which was essentially a poor mans version of it with no music. It really just does not strike the same reaction in me that your video did.
