  1. In the book, NWA is portrayed as one of the beginning rap groups in the 1980's. They were the gangter rappers that expressed their anger against the police and dicrimination. They sang about the reality of the hip hop scene in troublesome areas.I chose this song because rap is my favorite type of music and this song represents the start of gangster rap

This video is about graffiti as a disturbance and as a way of trashing building walls, phone booths, garages, etc in Cleveland. Graffiti is talked about in the book as a form of art. Tagging is mentioned as a form of an autograph written in spray paint or marker by a graffiti artist. Tagging is shown in this video clip all over the city, even on billboards. The graffiti shown is much less artistic looking than other forms seem in major cities or other countries. I chose this clip also since I am from near Cleveland.

This is a video of the Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black". In class we talked a lot about the British invasion, but almost exclusively focused on the Beatles. The Stones made their own impact on rock, and so I am posting one of their hits so others see the other side of the British coin.

I am a pretty passive fan of the Rolling Stones, but I like nearly all of theirs songs. "Paint it Black" is probably one of my favorites of theirs. Also, I would say I like them much more than the Beatles.

I chose The Beach Boys song, "Kokomo". With spring break coming up and the "beach scene" as talked about in chapter two I found it fitting. When listening to other Beach Boys hits such as "Endless Summer" that is mentioned in the book it is hard not to be happy. They have an uplifting beat that not only people enjoyed in the 1950s and 60s but is still popular today. I was first introduced to the song "Kokomo" on road trips to Florida for spring break and it makes me so excited!

This link is one that leads to a music video by The Spice Girls. This is one of the popular girl groups of the 90s that is in relation to those that we learned about in class. These bands included the Go Gos, The Bangles, and Janet Jackson. The Spice Girls are mentioned in the textbook under the girl group category. I chose them because when I was younger, this was one of my favorite girl groups. I still have to break out the old school 90s music sometimes because it still does make me happy. :)

In class we had to compare the original "Hound Dog" by Big Mama Thornton with Elvis Presley remake of the song so I decided to do the same here. The first link is to the remake of Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm and the second link is to the original Smooth Criminal by Michael Jackson. Alien Ant Farm took a great song and added a more rock tone to it than Jacksons Pop version of it. I think Alien Ant Farms verison gives it a harsher, meaner sound to it and I like that. They did not have to reword the song in any way like Elvis had to.

  7. The Beatles might have been the pioneers of the British invasion but the Rolling stones made England and Rock “cool”. With lyrics like “I can’t get no satisfaction” and with Mick Jagger’s sexual movements on stage they Rocked the suburbs of the U.S and shocked parents everywhere. Influenced by people like Nat king Cole and Chuck berry and named after a Muddy Waters Song. They Stones fuzzed blues, R&B and Rock perfectly. This song is my favorite song by them. It combines racy lyrics, great guitar and saxophone. Enjoy

In class, we saw a version of dance called the Lindy Hop, which was done by African Americans. This was interesting because of the fast movements, and overall fast paced beat of the dance. I became interested, so I wanted to look up another version and I found swing dancing. Swing dancing is very similar because it incorporates the same movements as the Lindy Hop. The difference is that the Lindy Hop is more reckless and chaotic.

The punk movement which we discussed in both the class and in the book was a movement that went through many phases. This Neo-expressionism that was expressed through their music but is probably better known for their unique and rebellious style of dress, hair style, and jewelry.Starting in the late 60's with bands like the Ramones or the Talking Heads, and still present today with bands like Green Day or Paramore. I have attached the following Green Day song that shows the non conformity to everyday life even in their music video where they suggest that they are viewed as insane by the public for their ideas and style. The song is Basket Case by Green Day.

This song is Megalomaniac by Incubus. Not their best song but not their worst either. I am a huge Incubus fan and this song of theirs at least has some historical value. When we talked about the punk scene in class we discussed Green Day and how they had a song banned from the radio. This song was also banned from the radio. I think its good that bands are still writing about things that are serious enough to be acknowledged by the government. At least every song isn't about sex and money, yet.

    Minor Threat - Straight Edge

There is a paragraph in the book about the DC hardcore scene in the mid '80s. Minor Threat was a huge part of this scene specifically. Their song, "Straight Edge" is emblematic of the ethos of the entire subculture, as described by Funk. The song exhibits many of the simplistic, crude, abrasive qualities of hardcore punk, with the message of the DC scene about not allowing substance abuse or promiscuity to weaken you as a person.

This is a piece of graffiti art done by Jean-Michel Basquiat. Basquiat was part of the Neo-expressionism era in New York but also is part of hiphop culture as much of his early pieces of artwork were graffiti on the D train in NY and various other places in the neighboring bouroughs. Basquiat used his unique style and heritage to bridge very different views of what art can be into one.

This video is a video of the Eagles performing one of their famous songs, Hotel California. According to the text, the Eagles were at their peak during the mid to late 70s. This video is obviously not from the 70s, it's from 20 years later. This shows how music has the ability to stay alive forever.

In class we talked about artists who take simple ideas or concepts to make art. For example the covering of the Reichstag, or Edward Kienholz "Back Seat Dodge 38". I went to the Ohio League Art Gallery recently and the exhibit they were featuring was called "Transforming the Mundane". It was really neat and revolved around the same idea as these artists. After a little bit of research on my own I found an extremely interesting piece of art that caught my eye. It is called "Aquarium Phonebooth" where the artist used an actual phonebooth as an aquarium. It is displayed on the streets so it is a neat thing to walk by an see. I thought this idea was very simple, and as the exhibit title was coined transformed the mundane.

We got introduced in class about how hip-hop and rap really started. We learned that it all start with a dj and now the music is mostly about the MC. To me it's incredibly hard to believe people not only like but think that Lil Wayne is the greatest rapper ever. Not only can't he really sing but the lyrics make absolutly not in the majority of his songs. Also the fact that he uses autotone for 99% of his stuff bothers me. Music obviously changes but I can't believe people think hes so great.

We learned about Woodstock in class and I can't help but think how awesome it would have been to be able to experience something like this? A Little Help From My Friends originally done by The Beatles. Around Christmas time I had 2 women wrap a Beatles poster for me and they went on and on about how they saw them in concert... some of these bands/artists/songs mean so much to us today that we can connect to and it would just be amazing to be able to experience it like these women did. Besides, everyone gets by with a little help from their friends. :)

The book talks about elvis and how he became so iconic by not only his music but by being in movies, on tv, and his live performances. He was one of the first to weave his way into all aspects of the performing arts. This video is an example of Elvis doing just that.

Rage against machine is my most favorite band when I am a high school student. At that time I love heavy metal band such as Queen, Metalica, Rage Against Machine etc. When we talk about rock and metal music I remind that music in my head. This music is one of my favorite.
